1990s:
Strength in Community
By the 1990s, Lilly’s Puerto Rican workforce surpassed 1,000 employees, making the company one of the island’s most significant employers. Medicines like Zyprexa, Evista, and Lorabid reached patients globally, while locally, employees forged new traditions — from wellness programs to volunteer service. When Hurricane Georges struck in 1998, Lilly didn’t hesitate: employees provided critical relief to Mayagüez communities, delivering washers and supplies to those in need. This decade proved that Lilly’s commitment extended far beyond making medicine. It was about families supporting each other and strengthening the fabric of Puerto Rican society.
