1960s:

A New Beginning

In the 1960s, Puerto Rico became home to a bold new chapter in Lilly’s history. Manufacturing first began in the Valencia facility, creating jobs and stability for local families. Soon, operations expanded to Mayagüez and Carolina, where generations of Puerto Rican workers would find not only employment, but a sense of pride in building medicines that mattered. Employees launched Eli Lilly Puertorriqueño, the first company newspaper, capturing their voices and stories. For many families, Lilly became more than a workplace — it was a place where careers were born and futures secured, laying the foundation for decades of growth.
